The minimum New Zealand Lotto Powerball jackpot prize is $4 million.

If the PowerBall is not won, there is a rollover until the following draw. When the Powerball jackpot reaches $50 million, the next game is a 'Must be won' game where, if there is still no jackpot winner, the prize fund is divided amongst the winners of the next prizes down.

How to play New Zealand PowerLuck and Powerball

The New Zealand Lotto is 6 out of 40 lotto. The Powerball is drawn from a different set of balls. You also need to purchase an extra number to play PowerBall.

In order to win the Powerball, you must first win the NZ Lotto jackpot (by matching 6 numbers with 6 balls drawn from the set of 40) and have the winning Powerball number on the same line.

New Zealand Powerball is drawn once per week on Saturdays and is televised on TV2.

New Zealand Lotto Winners

May 2006, NZ$17.9 million was won by a single combined Lotto and Powerball ticket holder in Kaeo, Northland.

June 2009, a NZ$36,890,255 prize was won by a single ticket sold at the Kuripuni Lotto and Post Shop in Masterton.

April 2008, NZ$19,054,243 was scooped on a single ticket which was purchased from a supermarket in New Plymouth.

October 2010, a single ticket won NZ$28,710,403. The winner came from Mobil Papakura.

History

The New Zealand Lotto started in August 1987 and in its first full year over NZ$64.5 million was won in lotto prizes.

In 1998, there were several 'extra' draws, one of which was courtesy of an unclaimed ticket sold in Blenheim six months earlier. It was worth NZ$1.5 million and was known as the Blenheim Bonus.

February 2001. Powerball, was launched as an enhancement to the NZ Lotto.

November 2002 saw several changes, a new-look logo, a new prize division for 4 numbers plus bonus and also a 'millionaire per week' draw, which was guaranteed to produce at least one millionaire from the Division One prize winners.

In August 2004, the 'millionaire per week' was withdrawn from NZ Lotto.

In October 2007, Powerball was changed to ten numbers and the minimum lotto prize was changed to NZ$3 million.

October 2008 saw the first 'Must Be Won' game, where the jackpot was rolled down to five Second Division winners. Each winner received NZ$6.1 million.

In October 2010, the minimum Powerball prize was raised to NZ$4 million.
