How to play Mega Millions

In order to win the Mega Millions jackpot, you need to match 5 numbers from the first 70 drawn and 1 number (Mega Ball) from a second batch of 24. The second number may be the same as one of the first numbers as Mega Ball numbers are drawn from a second set of balls.

Mega Millions draws are held Tuesdays and Fridays.

Players can choose the Megaplier option which is used to multiply your winnings (other than the jackpot) by a factor which is randomly selected before the game. This can be x2, x3, x4 or x5.

History

Originally called The Big Game, it was launched in September 1996 by only six participating states.

It didn't become Mega Millions until May 2002, when the name was changed. This coincided with not only more states joining, but also a change in the way the lotto was played. The ability to rollover was introduced as well as changing the number of balls drawn and a new minimum jackpot of $12 million (USD).

In October 2012, the Mega Millions was revamped, the number of main balls was changed from 56 to 75 and the Mega Ball range was changed from 46 to 15. The minimum jackpot and lower prize divisions was also changed - improving the overall winning odds to 1 in 15. The Megaplier range was also changed.
