How to play Mega Millions

In order to win the Mega Millions jackpot, you need to match 5 numbers from the first 56 drawn and 1 number (Mega Ball) from a second batch of 46. The second number may be the same as one of the first numbers as Mega Ball numbers are drawn from a second set of balls.

Mega Millions draws are held Tuesdays and Fridays.

History

Originally called The Big Game, it was launched in September 1996 by only six participating states.

It didn't become Mega Millions until May 2002, when the name was changed. This coincided with not only more states joining, but also a change in the way the lotto was played. The ability to rollover was introduced as well as changing the number of balls drawn and a new minimum jackpot of $12 million (USD).
