How to play the Canada 649 Lottery.

The Canadian 649 Lotto is a 6/49 game (as the name suggests). In order to win the Lotto 649 jackpot, you need to match 6 numbers with the balls drawn. A seventh ball is drawn as a Bonus Ball and if you match 5 numbers plus the Bonus Ball, you will win the second prize.

If the jackpot is not won, there is a rollover to the next draw where the next jackpot prize is added to it.

The Canada 649 lotto is played every Wednesday and Saturday.

History

The Canadian 649 Lotto was launched in June 1982, where the top prize was $500,000 (CAD) and was the first Canadian lottery where players could choose their own numbers. Previous to this, the Canadian Lottos used pre-printed lotto tickets.

In 1985, drawings were changed from once per week to twice per week. As you would expect, this led to double the amount of tickets being sold.

June 2004 brought a ticket price increase. Initially $1 per ticket, this was raised to $2 per ticket in order to increase the size of jackpots. The starting jackpot figure was immediately increased to from $2 million to $3.5 million.

The game's largest jackpot, and a Canadian lottery record, was drawn in October, 2005. The single winning ticket was worth $54.3 million (CAD) and was purchased by a group of 17 oil and gas plant workers in Camrose, Alberta.
