Picking your numbers versus the Odds

Every lottery draw is unique. Whatever happened in the last draw or any other draw has no effect on the next draw. The lottery machine doesn't remember what happened before, neither do the lottery balls. That's what makes it a lottery - the organisers ensure that every draw is totally random.

The Odds

So, if everything is random, what are the odds of picking that winning combination?
In a typical Lotto game with six balls for example, you have to pick the correct six numbers from 50 possible balls in any order to hit the jackpot.
The odds of picking one correct ball are 8.33:1
The odds of picking all six balls correctly are 13,983,816:1

To put this into perspective
Your chances of being struck by lightning are 2,000,000:1
A pregnant woman has a 705,000:1 chance of giving birth to quadruplets.
Someone eating an oyster has a 12,000:1 chance of finding a pearl inside of it. Everyone uses a different system for picking their lottery numbers. Some choose birthdays, their age, addresses, years, phone numbers, etc, some use prediction systems based on past results and others rely purely on luck.

But really, the only way to increase your chances is to buy more tickets.
